Exploring the Meaning of Life: Let the Gifted Fly High
Mr. LAM Hak Chung, Patrick
Associate Director (Teacher Professional Development and Parent Support)
The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education

Abstract:

We had to learn ourselves and, furthermore, we had to teach the despairing men, that it did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. (Frankl, 1959)

Helping the gifted discover their meaning of life not only clarifies their life aspiration and facilitates career planning, but also, more importantly, flourishes the gifted students’ lives. Meaning of life is composed of three indispensable elements, namely cognitive, affective and values development. It is beyond the life goals and motivation for oneself but a deep understanding of their gifts to the mankind. During the session, examples and practical strategies will be provided to illustrate the seeking of the meaning of life. Two gifted students will also share how the discovery of the meaning of their lives helped in shaping their studies and growth.
