Number Systems in Other Ancient Cultures
Objectives:
- To introduce Greek numerals
- To introduce Roman numerals and learn how to express a year using them
- To introduce Chinese rod counting
- To learn how to read "huama", a number system descended from Chinese rod counting
4.1 Greek number system (Lesson 9)
- In the long history of Mathematics, Greeks have always been remembered for their extraordinary achievements in Geometry. However, the number system they used is rather primitive by comparison.
- In ancient Greece, alphabet was used to represent numbers and their number system is non-positional i.e. quite similar to the Egyptian number system.
