Speaker	Dr. Alan I. LESHNER
Biography	Alan I. LESHNER is Chief Executive Officer, Emeritus, of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and former Executive Publisher of the Science family of journals. Before this position, Dr LESHNER was Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health. He also served as Deputy Director and Acting Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, and in several roles at the National Science Foundation. Before joining the government, Dr LESHNER was Professor of Psychology at Bucknell University. Dr LESHNER is an elected fellow of AAAS, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Public Administration, and many others. He is a member and served on the governing Council of the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. He served two terms on the National Science Board, appointed first by President Bush and then reappointed by President Obama. Dr LESHNER received Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in physiological psychology from Rutgers University and an A.B. in psychology from Franklin and Marshall College. He has been awarded seven honorary Doctor of Science degrees.
Topic	An American View of High Quality STEM Education
Abstract	The US has been debating science and technology education at least since the time of Sputnik in 1957. In that debate are questions, like: is it good to be tracking gifted students and treating them differently from others? If so, when should they be identified? What do all students need to know, and is that different for gifted students? What experiences are particularly useful for gifted students? These and other, related issued will be summarized.

Speaker	Dr. Bill YEUNG Chi Ho
Biography	Dr. YEUNG, Chi Ho Bill received a BSc, an MPhil, and a PhD degree in Physics from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He then worked as a postdoctoral research fellow in Switzerland and the United Kingdom for 4 years. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). His major research interests include statistical physics, disordered systems, optimization, routing, recommendation algorithms, complex and social networks, and the application of information technology in education and scientific inquiry.
Topic	From Simple Science to STEM for Every Student
Abstract	The application of scientific principles for innovation has been a focus in many science competitions where gifted students are engaged. Nevertheless, the rest and the majority of students who are not involved in science competitions, may not have the opportunity to experience integration, innovation and application of scientific principles, which are the essences of STEM education. In this talk, we will introduce some initiatives and examples at EdUHK to engage our students, with or without science background, into hands-on innovation activities related to science and technology and thus experience STEM.

Speaker	Dr. Gilmor KESHET-MAOR
Biography	Dr. Gilmor KESHET-MAOR is the head of Science and Mathematics Division at the Ministry of Education in Israel since September 2016. She holds a BSc in Pharmacy (1990), MSc in Pharmacology (1992), PhD in Biochemistry of Neurodegenerative Diseases (2000), and a biology teaching certificate (2010), all from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University, CA, USA, studying brain and bone marrow stem cells (2000-2004), and later a researcher at the Sheba Medical Center, Israel, studying cancer stem cells (2004-2011). Dr. KESHET-MAOR was a biology teacher (2010-2016). In addition, she was a lecturer and head of the program for Science and Mathematics teacher training at the Seymour Fox School of Education in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel (2011-2016). In parallel, she was a professional development specialist in inquiry learning and was in charge of R&D in the Division for Gifted and Outstanding Students in the Ministry of Education (2011-2016). Currently, Dr. KESHET-MAOR is in charge of k-12 science and mathematics education in Israel including curriculum, pedagogy, professional development for teachers and special programs.

Speaker	Dr. Heather KING
Biography	Dr Heather KING is a Research Fellow in Science Education at King's College London. Her work focuses on the pedagogical practices of educators both in and outside of the classroom. Her current research programme explores ways to support teachers in their understanding and implementation of science capital building pedagogical approaches. The study is framed by the principles of equity and social justice and seeks to support learners from marginalised communities to engage in science. The work is part of a larger longitudinal project aimed at understanding the science aspirations of young people in relation to their science capital.
Topic	A science capital pedagogical approach for broadening engagement with science
Abstract	The ASPIRES and Enterprising Science research projects from King’s College London have sought to understand the nature of, and reasons for, young people’s variable participation with science. Our findings suggest that a lack of ‘interest’ is not the problem. Rather, participation is affected by the extent to which young people are able to perceive science as being ‘for them’. In this presentation I will introduce the concept of science capital as a lens for understanding why some young people feel “at home” with science, and others do not. I will also explain how our research is currently being used in schools to tweak existing teaching practices with the aim of helping more young people, from more varied backgrounds, aspire to continue engaging with science in the future.

Speaker	Dr. Jean Soo CHUNG
Biography	Dr Jean Soo CHUNG is a professor of the Physics Department, Chungbuk National University since 1990. He received his PhD in Physics from the Ohio State University, USA in 1988. He had been working on phase transitions of spin systems and properties of disordered materials. Since 2003, he started to be interested in Physics teaching and served the educational sector of the Korean Physical Society. He participated in the development of the National Curriculum of Science in 2009. He has also served as a director of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity, an agent of the Korean government. He now has interest in the scientific literacy necessary for future generations.
Topic	Common & Gifted STEM Education for K-12 in Korea
Abstract	In the 20th century, science education had witnessed two major changes: 1960's change spurred by the Sputnik shock concentrated on training precise science for K-12 students, and 1980's change initiated by AAAS that emphasised science literacy. In the 21st century, we are expecting the 4th industrial revolution in which technology will change the human civilization drastically. Accordingly, the role of STEM education will become more and more important. After all, we have to prepare our students to cope with the future challenge. In 2009, scientists in Korea had the first opportunity of participating in development of the national curriculum of science for the K-12 students. The old curriculum based on 1960's trend was changed to include the idea of science literacy, e.g. to use scientific knowledge in public discussion and to become a smart consumer, and so on. However, new idea of common STEM education has been endangered in 2015, just before the political turmoil in Korea. Science education in Korea for gifted students is led by 27 centers in universities funded by the Ministry of Science, giving students the opportunities to "do" science. Many more gifted education centers are supported by the Ministry of Education, letting the students "learn" science. Nurturing students' problem-solving ability needs novel education such as project-based learning. To develop efficient and viable education for future generations, scientists' engagement in K-12 education is necessary.

Speaker	Dr. Michiharu NAKAMURA
Biography	Dr. NAKAMURA graduated from the University of Tokyo and joined Hitachi Central Research Laboratory in 1967, where he was engaged in compound semiconductors and optoelectronics research. He was a pioneer of semiconductor DFB laser development. In 2004, he was appointed Executive Vice President and Executive Officer of Hitachi Ltd., and then assumed a position of Board of Director till September 2011. He was responsible for corporate technology development and new business incubation. He was a visiting Researcher at California Institute of Technology in 1972-73. In 2011, he assumed the office of the President of Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), where policy-driven R&D funding is a major mission. Also, the dissemination of scientific information, science education for young generation, and science communication are among its current activities. He endeavored to achieve high-impact innovations based on advanced R&D. After completing four- year presidency, he has been serving as the Counsellor to the President and Advisor for Science and Technology of JST since October 2015.
Topic	STEM and Gifted Education towards a Future Sustainable Society
Abstract	STEM and gifted education are one of the highest priorities in the global and regional STI policy. Future leaders and professionals who tackle social and economic challenges have to be nurtured strategically in long-term perspectives. For this aim, our education system requires deep insight into social expectation and execution of Plan-Do-Check-Act cycles. Japan is launching new national STI initiatives towards "Society 5.0" or the 4th industrial revolution, where advanced ICT penetrates all the domains of society and realises a smart knowledge-based society. In the context of STEM education, both disciplinary professionals and innovation designers are required. Also, the younger generation is strongly encouraged to participate more in science and engineering under rapid demographic changes. In the key note speech, we discuss STI policy and challenges in Japan, STEM and gifted education practices, and key themes beyond STEM education.

Speaker	Dr. Rachel ZORMAN
Biography	Dr. Rachel ZORMAN is the executive director of the Henrietta Szold Institute, in Jerusalem, Israel. She received her Ph.D. from Columbia University, NYC. Dr. ZORMAN taught courses in gifted education and educational assessment at Stanford, San Jose, and Tel Aviv Universities. Dr. ZORMAN specialises in researching and promoting STEM talents, especially among girls. She presented her work in articles, books and international conferences. Dr. ZORMAN directs the identification of gifted students in Israel for the Ministry of Education, testing 15,000 students annually. She heads the Eureka programme, nurturing STEM talents among elementary school students from diverse populations and directs the National Mentoring Programme for gifted high school students.
Topic	Successful Initiatives for STEM Education for Gifted Students in Israel
Abstract	Israel is called the "start-up nation" following the international success of path breaking Israeli companies in various STEM areas, such as communication, internet, bio-tech, security, and digital printing. In 2013, Israel was rated in first place among 148 countries in innovative capacity, in second place in entrepreneurship, and in third place in global innovation. The critical factor in maintaining this competitive edge is promoting highly educated and creative personnel in STEM subjects. Thus, the mission of the Division for Gifted and Outstanding Students in the Ministry of Education is to nurture our most precious resource, the students, who can realise their extraordinary potential. The Henrietta Szold Institute identifies gifted and outstanding students and also implements a programme for highly gifted students for the Ministry of Education. In this presentation, the policy of the Division for Gifted and Outstanding Students will be described. In line with that policy, national programs promoting STEM leadership among gifted students will be presented, including: The Regional Responsibility Program, Academy in High School, and the National Mentoring Program for Highly Gifted Students.

Topic	From Coding to STEM Education
Speaker	Dr Ray CHEUNG, Director of CityU Apps Lab and Associate Professor, Department of Electronic Engineering, City University of Hong Kong
Biography	Dr. Ray C.C. CHEUNG received his BEng and MPhil degree in computing engineering from CUHK in 1999 and 2001, and received his Ph.D. degree in computing from Imperial College London (IC) in 2007. He received the Hong Kong Croucher Foundation Fellowship and Scholarship for his postdoctoral and doctoral research work at UCLA and IC. In 2009, he visited the Department of Electrical Engineering at Princeton University as a visiting research fellow. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering. His current research interests include cryptographic hardware designs, rapid prototyping trusted computing platforms, high-performance biomedical VLSI designs, and mobile application developments. He is currently the research group leader of the CityU Architecture Lab of Arithmetic and Security (CALAS), and the Director of CityU Apps Lab (CAL) supporting Campuswide Mobile Application development. He also received the CityU Teaching Excellence Award in 2012.

Topic	Cultivating interest and ability of students to engage in the "IT technology" part of STEM
Speaker	Dr Sam CHU
Biography	Dr Samuel Kai Wah CHU is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education. He is also the Deputy Director (Centre for Information Technology in Education) in the Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong. His research interests lie in the areas of gamification and game-based learning, social media in education, 21^st century skills, collaborative inquiry project-based learning, digital literacies, school and academic librarianship and knowledge management and intellectual capital. He has published over 250 articles and books including key journals in the area of IT in education and information and library science. His publication comprises 7 scholarly books with one on "21^st century skills" published by Springer. He is also the author of a series of children story books published by Pearson Longman, including My Pet Hamsters and The Chocolate Boy. Dr Chu is the Managing Editor for Journal of Information & Knowledge Management and was the Associate Editor for Online Information Review: The International Journal of Digital Information Research and Use (2012-16). He has been involved in over 50 research / project grants with a total funding of US$6,252,802. He has received a number of awards including his Faculty's Outstanding Researcher Award in 2013 and his Faculty's Knowledge Exchange Award in 2016. He is ranked as the top 66th author in the world regarding his publications in library and information science (DOI 10.1007/s11192-014-1519-9).

Speaker	Dr Kam Tim WOO Associate Professor of Engineering Education Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering, HKUST Founding Director Center for Global & Community Engagement, School of Engineering, HKUST
Biography	Dr Kam-Tim WOO received his BEng, MPhil and PhD degrees from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 1995, 1997 and 2005, respectively, all in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He joined the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering in January 1997, and is currently an associate professor of engineering education. He is the founding director of Center for Global & Community Engagement (GCE), School of Engineering since 2011. The center provides a major student enrichment programme for UG engineering students in liaising with professional associations and community organisations. He is also appointed as the supervisor of HKUST Robotics team since Sept 2010. Dr WOO has been very actively involved in teaching innovation. Besides developing different experiential learning courses, he encourages and mentors students to join various design competitions including Robotics Competitions, Engineering Design Competitions, Community Design Competitions, Business Plan Competitions, Student Paper Contests and Final Year Project and research competitions. Some projects are being able to contribute to the wellbeing of society and fulfilling social responsibility. Under his supervision, students have gained more than 140 awards since 2007, with over 70 awards won by the HKUST Robotics team in the past 6 years.
Abstract	The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) launches the Academy for Bright Future Young Engineers in 2016. The academy provides engineering students at HKUST with the opportunity to mentor and engage secondary school students in various engineering workshops, to spark their interest in technology and instill into them an engineering frame of mind. The speaker will introduce the academy and some STEM activities for primary and secondary school students at HKUST. He also shares the experience in driving the teaching innovation for HKUST students as well.

Speaker	Mr AU Cheuk Yin
Biography	Mr AU Cheuk Yin is currently an instructional assistant of HKUST. He obtained his BSc degree and Master degree from CUHK. He has over ten years of experience in secondary and tertiary Mathematics education. In the cooperation with Jolly Thinkers, he created the popular course "Mathematics is Fun - No Game, No Gain". The course is designed for the gifted students to learn some advanced topics in Mathematics through the experience and analysis of several board games. The teaching strategies let the students learn Mathematics in an interesting and fun way.
Topic	Mathematics is Fun - No Game, No Gain (Design and practice of this Mathematics-board game course)
Abstract	Board games like Monopoly, Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan are some intellectual and fun board games that require to play with strategies and mathematical skills. They are also called "non-electronic games" in this age, and have become a new trend in the last decade. In this talk, we will share the experience of using mainly these teaching aids in a Mathematics workshop to some gifted students, discussing the Mathematics used in the design principle and the playing strategies of the board games. In the end, the board games made the teaching and learning in the lessons really fun and interesting, and highly motivated the students to learn more about the Mathematics behind the board games.

Speaker	Mr Casey LAI
Biography	Casey LAI, father of one daughter and one son, was born in the 70's and educated in Hong Kong and Canada. Currently, Mr LAI is working in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. In the early stage of the internet era, he worked as a senior executive and technical consultant in a multi-national company. Mr LAI had participated in and was responsible for the construction of fixed network and mobile telecommunications in media streaming projects for China Telecom, China Mobile, Hong Kong CSL and Taiwan Mobile. Since 2012, Mr LAI started his new venture in developing an innovative electronic teaching tool called InnoBits. In 2014, he established a new company called METAS Hong Kong Ltd. The mission of METAS is to bring and popularise STEM education to every family and school in China and overseas.

Abstract	During this seminar, Mr Casey LAI, a STEM education pioneer, would share why it is important to have STEM classes at school, how STEM classes should be conducted and how to measure the result of STEM. He will also explain how STEM would stimulate creativity and what tools would be used for STEM education.

Speaker	Mr CHU Tsz Wing, Principal of Baptist Rainbow Primary School
Biography	Mr CHU Tsz Wing is the Principal of Baptist Rainbow Primary School. From 2004 onwards, he has been working on the promotion of “Electronic Schoolbags”, actively engages in various educational activities on Information Technology and holds over 200 seminars on the relevant topic. Mr CHU has been an Executive Committee Member of the Association of I.T. Leaders in Education (AiTLE) since 2004, and is awarded Most Valued Teacher in Microsoft Valued Teacher Program for three consecutive years (2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013). In 2010, he was awarded one of the Innovative Teachers of Hong Kong and The Best of the Teachers in Microsoft Innovative Education Forum 2010. Mr CHU represented Hong Kong four times in participating in Worldwide Innovative Education Forum held in Brazil, South Africa, Washington, D.C., and Prague respectively. Abstract	This talk shares the experience of Baptist Rainbow Primary School in implementing STEM education by a “trans-disciplinary” method and a dual curriculum. Students learn in classes in accordance with the curriculum of aided schools before lunchtime while a "DreamStarter" curriculum would be launched in the afternoon. By then students would be divided into groups of 8 to 10 randomly, disregard their classes or ability, following an assigned teacher to learn together and have discussions on their dreamed thematic learning throughout the school year.

He is the Deputy Chairman of Junior Achievement HK, which is dedicated to inspiring and preparing young leaders to succeed in a global economy through entrepreneurship, and is the founding CEO of WebOrganic, a social enterprise designed to help deprived students with digital inclusion and eLearning. He is the Deputy Chairman of Tse Sui Luen (HKSE stock code 417). He co-founded and currently serves as the Vice Chairman of SCHSA to provide safety bell emergency call service for the elderly.

Speaker	Mr. FONG Ho Cheung Savio, director Galaxy Scientific Group
Biography	Savio FONG, founder of Galaxy Scientific Group, since 1995 he has established over 30 astronomical facilities in East Asia, for universities and research institutes in the region. In 2010 Savio FONG established the 6th highest observatory in the world, at 5100m altitude in western Tibet, for Taiwan University, and a fully automatic observatory for Galaxy Scientific Group one year afterward, which can be operated from Hong Kong for scientific observations. With technical school's background together with formal grammar school and university engineering education, in additions to decades of practical experience, Savio FONG is a specialist on astronomy systems, including assembling & manufacturing instrument parts, system integration of optics, electronics, machinery, software as well as civil construction. A live example of STEM. In the past 2 decades, Savio FONG has developed different curriculum and workshops on astronomy for more than a hundred schools and organizations to promote popular astronomy.

Abstract	Mr. Savio FONG Ho Cheung is the founder of Galaxy Scientific Group, a local firm which provides technical services and popular astronomy education to different organisations and schools. Being formally trained as an engineer, Savio was pursuing his dream in astronomy during his leisure time. In 1996, Savio committed himself to the career in astronomy and set up Galaxy Scientific Group. Since not only having astronomy knowledge, but with his engineering background, Savio is specialised in astronomy systems setup, instrument parts manufacturing as well as system integration. In 20 years, Savio and his team has conducted more than 1000 workshops, classes and talks, and established 30+ astronomy facilities all over China and south-east Asia. These are solely supported by his passion in astronomy. 2010 is a year with a great leap in his career: he had the opportunity to build his own private observatory in one of the highest-altitude observing sweet spots, Tibet. He has used the site from remoting telescope at home to capture many magnificent images of the mysterious universe. Now, Savio also share this wonderful chance in a life time with the new generations. From time to time, Savio organises different exchange programmes between Hong Kong schools and Tibetan communities, so that our new generations would be able to appreciate our mesmerizing starry sky, and hopefully some of them will be enlightened to astronomy. In this talk, Savio will share his interest in astronomy since his childhood, the establishment of Galaxy Scientific Group, and his career in astronomy. He will also share his experience in organising curriculums and workshops in Hong Kong and overseas as well as his view and suggestions on STEM education development.

Biography	Anthony had been a secondary school Mathematics teacher and panel head for many years, and he was a former curriculum development officer of the Education Infrastructure Division of the Education Bureau. He is currently a school development officer of the Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a Mathematics eLearning consultant for Pearson Hong Kong. In 2012, Mr OR and a group of Mathematics educators established the GeoGebra Institute of Hong Kong to promote the use of the free dynamic mathematics software GeoGebra in the learning and teaching of Mathematics. He is now the Chair of the Institute.

Abstract	In his 2015 Policy Address the Chief Executive put forward the recommendation to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. The free dynamic mathematics software GeoGebra (Geometry + Algebra) integrates mathematics, technology and coding in one package that supports construction, modelling and investigation. It is an ideal tool for STEM education. In this session, the speaker will share the curriculum design, pedagogy and assessment of the GeoGebra courses co-organized by the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education and the GeoGebra Institute of Hong Kong at primary and secondary levels. The speaker will elaborate on how to make use of GeoGebra to conduct various hands-on activities on geometric and algebraic constructions, designs, inquiries and coding that nurture the science and mathematics literacy of students, and foster STEM as well as STEAM (A: Art) education.

Biography	Mr YUEN is the ICT panel head and Technology KLA head at the St Stephen's College. He is also a seconded teacher in EDB (IT in Education) since 2015. Mr YUEN is actively participating in many communities related to IT in Education. He is the vice-chairman of the AiTLE. He also serves as an editor of Computer Literacy e-textbook for Junior Secondary. In addition, he is invited to be the speaker in seminars to have sharings on e-Learning implementation, BYOD and ICT teaching.	Stephen majors in Computer Science (HKUST) with a master degree in eLearning (HKU), and he has been teaching for 10 years. He is currently a computer teacher of the St Stephen's College, an Executive Committee member of Association of I.T. Leaders in Education and a council member of the Cisco Networking Academy (HK). Stephen is responsible for STEM education and system development at school. He is experienced in organising STEM related activities such as Inventors Club at school, public competitions and summer camps for local schools, which cover skills in electronics, robotics, 3D printing, the use of laser cutting machine, etc. His activities for students also focus on learning practical skills and applying them to reference designs.

Speaker	Ms Janet RAFNER
Biography	Janet RAFNER is a visiting researcher and former US Fulbright Fellow at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen and at ScienceAtHome, a large-scale crowdsourcing project based at Aarhus University. She graduated from the University of Virginia and holds degrees in Physics and Studio Art. Her current work bridges domains of physics, mathematics, design, science communication, simulation modeling, gamification, didactics, and science, technology, and society (STS). Her previous work includes an internship with the Physics Reimagined group at Paris-Sud, where she assisted in outreach projects including physics demonstrations and animations, and authored the physics outreach Wikipedia page. At ScienceAtHome, RAFNER works on all things design related, co-maintains the ScienceAtHome website, and is currently developing physics visualisations. At the Niels Bohr Institute, RAFNER, along with a fluid flow simulation group, are on a project to create an innovative, computationally intensive video game. The game will engage the public in the efforts of the mathematical fluids community to solve one of the Millennium Prize Problems: whether a singularity can form in a turbulent flow. RAFNER has also curated 'physics + design' exhibitions at the Science Museum of Virginia and at the Niels Bohr Institute for Copenhagen's Culture Night. She intends to pursue a career that integrates the arts and the sciences while continuing to find new ways to reimagine physics.
Topic	Reimagining Physics Education with Visualisation, Gamification, and Citizen Science
Abstract	Working with an international team of mathematicians, scientists, science communicators, artists and animation experts, my collaborations seek to advance public and academic understanding of complex phenomena in physics. Combining technical and aesthetic elements, we will continue to develop more useful and intuitive visualizations for engaging students and the public while incorporating citizen science and gamification into our projects. Citizen science opens the doors of the lab, inviting people of all backgrounds to contribute to scientific problem solving on a voluntary basis. Gamification is one of the most important tools for scientists making their science problems tangible and accessible to a layman. It is essentially the process of turning a research problem into a game. An explosion in citizen science projects is offering great promise towards solving interesting science challenges that are immensely complex and don't lend themselves to straight-forward algorithmic analysis. People worldwide spend three billion hours a week playing games and many of these players are clever, insightful and highly focused. By turning science into game challenges, we can tap into that resource. Simultaneously, we hope to nurture a new facet to the culture of science to disseminate and publish the work around the world. By studying the diverse ways that complex physics phenomena is portrayed in research, classroom settings, and outreach endeavors, we aim to design new visualizations and document the effectiveness of these different approaches. Teaming with researchers, students, and communicators throughout the process, we are seeking to leverage the expertise of interdisciplinary collaborators and create innovative ways of sharing these realizations through exhibits, conferences, interactive web content, apps, publications, and events for the public.

Biography	Professor H. C. MAN Dean, Faculty of Engineering, and Chair Professor of Materials Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Upon obtaining a PhD in Laser Materials Processing from the Imperial College of Science, University of London in 1984, Professor MAN had been working in the UK industries for years and returned to Hong Kong as a teaching staff member in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His research interests are mainly in the area of advanced manufacturing technologies, laser materials processing, material technologies and material corrosion analysis, etc. Upon his appointment as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering since 2012, Professor MAN has been striving for offering three aviation industry related programmes by the Faculty of Engineering, nurturing talents for the aviation industry. Following a rapid development of the global aviation industry, it is estimated that 40,000 new planes would be in service in the coming 15 years, while vacancies of pilots and aircraft maintenance craftsmen would be up to 460,000 in the following 20 years. The aviation industry has an ardent demand for aircraft maintenance engineers, professionals in airport operations and aviation logistics. The Hong Kong International Airport has been supporting the development of the four-pillar economic sectors of Hong Kong, which takes up 58% of the GDP. The flourishing development of these sectors relies on the smooth and efficient movements of people and goods. There will be an estimation of over 140,000 jobs directly relating to the airport created after the implementation of the Three-Runway System. In response to the above, Faculty of Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University initiated to offer an undergraduate programme in aviation engineering. As for scientific research, the Aviation Services Research Centre (ASRC), established by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in collaboration of a local aviation maintenance company and Boeing Corporate, focuses on research areas including aircraft convention, airframe MRO, evolution of procedures, industrial systems enhancement, aerospace multi-axis machining, aerospace non-destructive testing and inspection, composite structure inspection and repair, machining and casting of aerospace materials, and rapid prototyping, etc.

Biography	Assoicate Dean (Education), Faculty of Science Deputy Chairman & Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics BS (The Chinese University of Hong Kong) PCEd (The University of Hong Kong) PhD (University of California, San Diego) I obtained my B.Sc. degree in Mathematics (1982, New Asia College) from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a Certificate of Education (distinction) from the University of Hong Kong. Then I received my Ph.D. in Mathematics from University of California, San Diego, under the supervision of Michael Freedman (Fields Medalist 1986) with specialization in low-dimensional topology. My current research interest is in geometry and topology. In recent years, I have been putting in time and effort on student development and mathematics outreach to society.

Speaker	Prof. Wing Hong CHAN, Professor (Emeritus) of Chemistry, Department of Chemistry of HKBU and HKBU Haimen Institute of Science & Technology
Biography	Prof. WH CHAN received a first class honors degree in Chemistry from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 1979, he completed a PhD degree in organic synthesis at University of Alberta, Canada. After one year of postdoctoral study at UCLA, he accepted a faculty appointment in the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and was promoted to full professor in 1998. He served as the Head of Chemistry Department from 1998 to 2007. He has published over 200 research papers in the field of organic synthesis, fluorescent chemosensors and chemical education. At present, he has an h-index of 31 and a total citations of 4000. In recent years, commissioned by the Hong Kong Academy of Gifted Education and under his leadership, HKBU Department of Chemistry successfully operated six Gifted Science Programs for gifted local secondary school students.

Speaker	Prof. LAM Hon Ming
Biography	Prof Hon Ming LAM is a native Hong Kong citizen who received his primary, secondary, and tertiary education in Hong Kong. After completing his B.Sc. and M.Phil. degrees in The Chinese University of Hong Kong, he was awarded his Ph.D. degree from Northwestern University. He received further postdoctoral training at New York University, before taking up a faculty position in CUHK in 1997. He is currently a professor in School of Life Sciences, the director of Molecular Biotechnology Program, and the deputy director of the Partner State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology at CUHK. Beside research and teaching duties in his university, Prof LAM also serves in various committees related to science education in Hong Kong.
Topic	Promoting STEM Education in Hong Kong Schools
Abstract	STEM education is recognised as a driving force for future development and competitiveness in Hong Kong. All along, the elements of STEM education are dispersed in local school curricula including the subjects from Key Learning Areas of Science, Technology and Mathematics Education and Key Learning Tasks. The promotion of STEM education provides an impetus for teachers of these KLAs to collaborate and further enhance the effectiveness and coherence of learning and teaching. Current official strategies of promoting STEM education in Hong Kong contain six aspects, including curriculum review, student learning activities, learning and teaching resources, teacher professional development, partnerships with stakeholders, and sharing of good practices. The progress of these efforts will be summarised in this presentation.

Speaker	Prof. Maw-Kuen WU
Biography	Prof. Maw-Kuen WU is currently a distinguished research fellow at the Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica in Taiwan. Prof. WU has received many major scientific awards including the US National Academy Comstock prize, the Bernd T. Matthias Prize, the Humboldt Research Award from Germany, the Nikkei Asia Prize of Japan, the Ettore Majorana-Erice-Science Prize of Italy, and the Presidential Science Prize of Taiwan. He is a member of the Academia Sinica, Taiwan, a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences, and a member of the Academy of the Developing Countries. In addition, he served as a member of the cabinet in charge of science and technology in Taiwan, from 2000 to 2002, as Deputy Minister, and from 2004 to 2006, as the Minister of the National Science Council (Now the Ministry of Science and Technology). He was the Director of the Institute of Physics in Academia Sinica from 2006-2011, and in 2012-2016 was the President of the National Dong Hwa Univerity located at his hometown in the east coast of Taiwan.
Topic	First Adventure in Science - A special programme for talented youths in physical sciences
Abstract	The Institute of Physics in Academia Sinica has launched a special programme for talented youths in physical sciences since 2006, which aims at high school students from the second semester of their first high school academic year through the first half of their third high school academic year. The programme breaks up into two one-year sub-programs. The first sub-programme consists of activities such as lectures on selected topics in physical sciences, experiments, group discussions and various competitions among the students. Students will be evaluated through these activities and a small portion of these individuals will be selected to continue their participation in the second sub-programme. During the second part of this programme, selected individuals will continue their work with their advisors in the area of their interest. Through the process of working on problems that they choose, students will learn how to perform independent research and develop their research ability for their future career. It is also our aim that through this programme, we can educate more students, and the general public as a whole to have the correct understanding of science and scientific research. I shall present the details of our programme and the major accomplishments we made in the past ten years.

Speaker	Prof. NG Tai Kai
Biography	Professor NG Tai Kai is the Executive Director of the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE). Professor NG was appointed as the Associate Dean of Science of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2004. Since 2010, he has also served as the Director of the HKUST's Centre for the Development of the Gifted and Talented. He is also a member of the Curriculum Development Council (CDC) Committee on Gifted Education. As a physicist, Professor NG has made important contributions in his field. In 1993, he received an Honourable Mention in the Achievement in Asia Award of the Overseas Chinese Physics Association. In 2000 and 2002, he was elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society and awarded the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship respectively. Besides academic research, he has also been dedicated to primary and secondary education, making invaluable contributions to improve the quality of science education in Hong Kong. For instance, he has collaborated with the Education Bureau to organise teacher training programmes and develop physics teaching materials, as well as served as a member of the CDC Committee on Science Education.
